Coordination & Coherence

The United Nations Army-USA (UNA-USA) is an integral part of the broader United Nations system, working in close partnership with various UN agencies and organizations. This collaboration is key to advancing the UN’s mission of promoting international cooperation, security, and sustainable development. By joining forces with other UN bodies, UNA-USA is able to contribute specialized expertise, resources, and operational capacity that strengthen efforts to address global challenges.

Modern peacekeeping missions have evolved to address complex and multifaceted issues. Instead of focusing solely on preventing conflict and maintaining security, today’s peacekeeping operations take a comprehensive approach that includes several critical areas:

  • Facilitating Political Processes:

UNA-USA supports diplomatic initiatives that encourage dialogue, negotiation, and peaceful resolution of conflicts. This can involve mediating between parties, fostering inclusive political discussions, and laying the groundwork for long-term stability.

  • Protecting Civilians:

Protection of vulnerable populations is a core responsibility. Peacekeepers implement strategies to safeguard civilians from violence, provide humanitarian assistance, and create safe environments for communities affected by conflict.

  • Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration (DDR):

Once hostilities cease, there is a need to disarm former combatants, help them transition back into civilian life, and support their reintegration into society. UNA-USA assists in providing resources, training, and community support to make this process successful and to reduce the risk of renewed conflict.

  • Supporting Constitutional Processes and Elections:

Establishing a fair and democratic system is essential for lasting peace. UNA-USA helps guide constitutional drafting processes, strengthen legal frameworks, and ensure free and fair elections by offering technical assistance and monitoring activities.

  • Promoting and Protecting Human Rights:

Upholding human rights principles is fundamental to all aspects of peace operations. UNA-USA works to raise awareness, prevent abuses, and build local capacity for protecting rights and freedoms.

  • Restoring the Rule of Law and Legitimate Authority:

Rebuilding trust in public institutions is vital after conflict. UNA-USA supports efforts to reform justice systems, train law enforcement and judicial personnel, and help countries extend legitimate government authority throughout their territories.

Through these comprehensive efforts, UNA-USA plays a pivotal role in building lasting peace, fostering sustainable development, and ensuring that communities emerge from conflict stronger, more resilient, and better governed.
