Peacekeeping

Peacekeeping has established itself as one of the most effective mechanisms available to the United Nations for assisting nations in traversing the challenging transition from conflict to peace. Contemporary multidimensional peacekeeping operations are tasked not only with maintaining peace and security but also with facilitating political processes, safeguarding civilians, aiding in the disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration of former combatants, supporting constitutional processes, organizing elections, promoting and protecting human rights, as well as assisting in the restoration of the rule of law and the extension of legitimate state authority.

The mandates for peacekeeping operations are derived from the UN Security Council; troops and police are provided by Member States; and these operations are managed by the Department of Peace Operations, with support from the Department of Operational Support at UN Headquarters in the United States.
